Happy Canada Day Published on June 30, 2016 Friday marks the 149th anniversary of Canada Day! To celebrate, we’ve provided a few fun facts about the nation’s holiday. The holiday was originally referred to as Dominion Day because in 1867 Canada was actually named the Dominion of Canada. The Dominion of Canada, now Canada, was made up of four colonies: Upper Canada (Ontario), Lower Canada (Quebec), Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.Contrary to America’s process of freedom from Great Britain, the Canadian colonies requested independence from Queen Victoria and she agreed. The Dominion of Canada signed the British North American Act to declare independence and used it as their constitution until 1982.“O Canada” wasn’t the country’s national anthem until 100 years after it was first sung. The full lyrics are below. O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, We stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
